Meet Khanyi Chaba – successful business woman

Khanyi Chaba

1. What is your definition of success?
The ability to give your best in everything that you do without losing the sense of who you are.

2. As a young girl, who were your role models and why?
My mother. I had watched her raise many kids single handedly, without education or formal job. Her zest for life and positive spirit inspired many of us to be where we are today.

3. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Achieving my tertiary qualification in Architecture through self funding.

4. What advice would you give your 18-year old self if you met her today?
You owe it to yourself to be the best that you can be. Nobody owes you anything.

5. What do you think the world needs more of?
Humility, empathy, compassion and love. Everything else will fall in place.

Meet Dr Zama Katamzi – Space Physics Researcher

Zama

Zama Katamzi is a space physicist working at the South African National Space Agency.

Katamzi was 15 when she watched an episode of Star Trek and fell in love with outer space. Astronomy is a male-dominated field, but Katamzi seized the challenge. Today she’s a role model for a new generation of female scientists.

1. What is your definition of success?
Achieving your goals in spite of all the adversities you have to overcome.

2. As a young girl, who were your role models and why?
My mother and women who are successful in male dominated fields.

3. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Obtaining my PhD under 30 years because getting a PhD was dream of mine since I was in high school.
Getting my first academic paper published because I was contributing to the advancement of the world’s knowledge of space.

4. What advice would you give your 18-year old self if you met her today?
Persevere; the goal is well worth it!

5. What do you think the world needs more of?
Generous people who are willing to share what they have (e.g. time, knowledge, experience or wealth) with those in need. Courageous people who are willing to work hard to achieve a decent or better life, and uplift their community.

Thank you

In early March, we launched a call-out to girls aged 12 – 19 to be the models for the photoshoot to get the images for the Dream, Girl website. We needed five models to hold the signs that read “I can change the world”, the central slogan in our photos. Within less than 24 hours more than 10 girls had contacted us.

On a bright sunny day in April, Sarah photographed the five girls on a beautiful deserted beach in The Netherlands.

We would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to the girls – Pipa, Mathilde, Charlotte, Sally and Eline for being our beautiful ‘models’. And we’d also like to thank their parents, for trusting us with their daughters.
